Pioneer

Modern-style format from Return to Ravnica forward

Magic: The Gathering Pioneer — The format between Modern and Standard

Pioneer was introduced in 2019 as a non-rotating format covering Magic sets from Return to Ravnica (2012) forward — no fetchlands, no original Reserved List eternal staples. The goal: give players a tournament format more accessible than Modern (smaller card pool, lower deck prices) while still being non-rotating (unlike Standard). Pioneer reached a stable meta around 2022 and has become a popular MTG Arena format (Historic shares much of the same pool digitally). Top decks in 2026 typically include Mono-Green Devotion, Rakdos Midrange, Phoenix decks, and various flavors of Lotus Field combo.

60+ cards main, 15 sideboard. Same as Standard/Modern structure.

  • 02

Legal cards: Return to Ravnica (October 2012) forward.

Strategie und Spielgefühl

Pioneer rewards understanding the format's combo-control balance. Tier 1 decks have remained relatively stable: midrange (Rakdos), devotion (Mono-G/Mono-W), and a rotating cast of combo decks (Lotus Field, Greasefang, Niv-to-Light).
